Pearl Harbor continues to be a vibrant military base and headquarters for the Pacific Fleet. From that first surprise attack on Pearl Harbor to the surrender of the Japanese on the deck of the legendary Battleship Missouri, these four historic sites tell the story of the War in the Pacific. They commemorate and honor the valor of the many men and women of that generation.
Through Take Stock in Pearl Harbor, we’re asking for all people who remember WWII and the “date which will live in infamy” to help preserve and advance these important national historic landmarks to ensure they continue to be vital visitor destinations.
Fifteen minutes into the attack on Oahu and Pearl Harbor, the USS Arizona was attacked. The bombing killed 1,177 marines and sailors on board. The memorial pays homage to those who gave their last full measure of devotion. The monument preserves and interprets their lives and all the stories of the Pacific War, from the internment of Japanese Americans to the battles in the Aleutians.
Your investment in Take Stock in Pearl Harbor will help with the following needed upgrades to keep these memories vibrant and readily accessible to all visitors:
"AIR RAID PEARL HARBOR THIS IS NO DRILL." These were the first words broadcast as the Japanese air raid began on Pearl Harbor. The Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum on Historic Ford Island occupies two hangars and the Ford Island Control Tower that still bear the scars of our nation's aviation battlefield. For nearly seven decades, these historic landmarks have proudly stood guard over Pearl Harbor and Ford Island, but weather, corrosion and neglect have taken a drastic toll, threatening to erase this symbol of American resilience and sacrifice.
USS Bowfin (SS-287) is a fleet attack submarine that fought in the Pacific during WWII, and helped to make famous the term, “Silent Service.” Bowfin was launched exactly one year after the attack on Pearl Harbor, with the nickname Pearl Harbor Avenger. The USS Bowfin is one of only fifteen surviving U.S. WWII submarines that was not turned into scrap metal or used for target practice.
USS Missouri is the site where World War II formally ended. it is an obligation to future generations, an inspiration to millions of visitors, and it is quite simply America’s Battleship. Retired to Pearl Harbor after Operation Desert Storm, her active naval service may be complete but her legacy is not forgotten. She now serves as the centerpiece of the Battleship Missouri Memorial.
